Baby Colic Natural Remedies

Colic for young babies includes painful indigestion. Symptoms of colic include gas, bloating and pain during and after feeding; spitting up may also be a sign of colic. Causes come from feeding baby the wrong type of formula or reaction to something in the formula; also reaction to mother’s milk when the mother is eating the wrong foods or is stressed. Colic also may happen when the child is stressed or is eating solid foods too early.

Modern medicine uses acid-reducing medicines for colic which may make the body feel better but may be toxic or disrupt the digestion further.

Naturally, the best thing to do is find the cause-usually dietary for mom or child. There are several great colic solutions that help the baby’s digestive system to work normally. Ideally the child should be breast fed until the child’s eye teeth come in, signifying the digestive enzymes are starting to flow and the baby can be put slowly on solids.

Disclaimer: some drugs and herbs should not be combined.

Natural Healing Protocol: Combining supplements will do more to support your body’s ability to function properly than using just one. Use the following remedies for best results — your ability to heal will depend on the severity and length of time your symptoms have been present.

Natural Healing Protocol

Herbs for Baby Colic

Herbs are plants valued for their specific strengthening/ tonifying properties.

Use the following herbs as a tea or in a glycerin extract:

Catnip and Fennel is the classic pair that helps most children; although they can be used separately.

Fennel breaks up gas, bloating and intestinal distress.

Cumin can be used when the other herbs don’t work. It works similarly to release gas, bloating, and generally indigestion.

Cell Salts to Help with Baby Colic

To make a cell salt solution, put up to 10 tablets of each cell salt in a 16- to 24-ounce bottle; fill with water and swirl to dissolve tablets. Sip throughout the day.

These soft pellets are ideal for infants and toddlers:

#8 Mag phos 6X – cramping, colic
#10 Nat phos 6X – acidity, digestion, bloating
#11 Nat sulph – digestive, liver health, gas

Baby Colic Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic natural medicines safe for everyone including infants and pregnant or nursing women. You may use 6X, 30X, 6C or 30C potencies.

Because infants can’t tell you what is going on, choose a specific remedy or try Hyland’s colic tabs or Boiron’s Colic tablets to good effect.

When there is a more specific indication, use one of the following remedies:

Colocynthis – intestinal distress that is seen when the baby doubles over or desires to be held around the belly.

Dioscorea – colic symptoms displayed when the baby arches their back to get relief.

Chamomilla – when the child screams from anger or colic and cannot be easily consoled and has chopped spinach-like stools.

Celiac Disease Natural Remedies

Celiac disease comes with symptoms of chronic gas, bloating, indigestion, later immune deficiency, and finally neurological issues. Celiac is seen intestinally as damaged and flattened villi. The culprit seems to be gluten. The diet for celiac is so strict that as little as ten milligrams of gluten affects most sufferers. Celiac disease can also cause migraines and emotional problems. Treatment for celiac disease comes first through a diet eliminating gluten. Steroids may also be prescribed for celiac patients temporarily (hopefully).

Paul Bergner describes celiac disease best as a food allergy, not just gluten intolerance, where digestion, nerves, and connective tissues are all affected.

One never outgrows a food allergy. Most people have food allergies to dairy, wheat or eggs, and other foods. You must totally stop a food for 40 days and then retest. The intestinal system can rebuild almost completely; I have seen homeopathics restore balance completely through clients’ reports about how they have overcome a wheat allergy by using Carcinosin homeopathic (generally it is their constitutional remedy). But, you must be careful to avoid the offending food.

Celiac is also seen to contribute to leaky gut syndrome and can be treated naturally. Part of celiac problems may be Vitamin D deficiency which is important to the matrix of connective tissue health of the intestines.

Diet for Celiac Disease

In your diet for celiac, It is critical to remove NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) because they cause leaky gut syndrome and destroy the integrity of the mucosal wall in the intestine. Avoid your food intolerance. Improve digestion by eating a more natural diet, avoiding tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea, fast foods, processed foods. Heal the leaky gut by using Vitamin D and herbs such as plantain and calendula to heal the lining of the intestines.

Natural Remedies for Celiac Disease include:

Vitamin D— (5000IU per day) is essential to maintain intestinal integrity.

Acidophilus (50 billion CFUs per day) will help maintain beneficial intestinal flora.

Disclaimer: some drugs and herbs should not be combined.

Natural Healing Protocol: Combining supplements will do more to support your body’s ability to function properly than using just one. Use the following remedies for best results — your ability to heal will depend on the severity and length of time your symptoms have been present.

Herbs for Celiac Disease

Herbs are plants valued for their specific strengthening/ tonifying properties.

Use a combination of the following herbs for celiac in capsule or powder for maximum benefit, and adjust as your condition improves. Therapeutic dose is equal to one capsule of each herb 3 times a day or 1 liquid dropper full of an herbal tincture 3 times a day.

Chamomile is a mild bitter which helps improve digestion.

Marshmallow root is an herb for celiac to calm mucus membranes of the gastro-intestinal tract.

Aloe vera juice helps celiac by calming and soothing mucus membranes of the gastrointestinal tract.

Licorice root in small quantities acts like a steroid to calm and soothe the mucus membranes without side effects or toxicity.

Plantain or calendula can help seal leaky gut and repair the gastro intestinal system.

Astragalus is an herb for celiac used to improve the immune system.

Constipation Natural Remedies

Constipation is the inability to have a bowel movement every day. This creates symptoms of gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, backache, and possible headache. Causes come from a lack of water (dehydration), lack of proper diet and fiber, lack of exercise (movement of the body), emotional processes and fears, and many types of medications such as pain killers, some antihistamines, antacids, muscle relaxants, anti-depressants, iron, and some diuretics, etc. Many people resort to using laxatives for their constipation symptoms, which can have lasting side effects.

Modern medicine should be evaluating prescription drugs to remove components which cause constipation instead of prescribing laxatives for drug-induced constipation. Doctors also do colonoscopies to look for blockages in the intestines, or sometimes use exploratory surgery.

What You Can Do Naturally for Constipation

Identify the causes (they may be many) which interrupt the natural flow of your bowel movements:

First, evaluate any medications (for constipation as a side effect or from those that may be drying to your body), then look at medications such as antacids, acid blockers which interfere with digestion and elimination. Next, antibiotics interfere with normal elimination by destroying friendly bacteria. Also look for other drugs such as pain relievers, even as simple as aspirin or heavier such as opiates. When a person can eliminate these medications, then we can look at diet and lifestyle.

Next, eat good food and drink water. First eliminate tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea, sodas which are high in chemicals, and fast foods which are high calorie and low nutrition with no fiber. Add whole fruits and vegetables which are high in fiber, and other fibers. Increase your water intake between meals.

Increase your fiber. Psyllium husk is great but must be drunk quickly as it gels up. Start with a teaspoon in eight ounces of water once a day and increase as desired.

Flax fiber (ground doesn’t gel up and has a pleasant nutty flavor. You can also put a prune or two into 8 ounces of water over night and eat the prune and drink the juice in the morning. Figs can do the same thing and are great for children.

Note on fibers: insoluble fibers such as psyllium, flax will increase bowel movement; soluble fibers (dissolve in water) can cause gas and slow down bowel movements.

Exercise: Breathing and moving your body helps to massage your intestines while oxygenating your tissues.

Use natural supplements to get your digestive tract working better. Use liquid acidophilus to improve the friendly bacteria. Take magnesium as it helps to move the bowels by hydrating the colon to keep things moving.

Disclaimer: some drugs and herbs should not be combined.

Natural Healing Protocol: Combining supplements will do more to support your body’s ability to function properly than using just one. Use the following remedies for best results — your ability to heal will depend on the severity and length of time your symptoms have been present.

Indigestion Natural Remedies

When you don’t digest food well, you will have indigestion. Symptoms of indigestion include gas, bloating, and maybe even heartburn; the food just doesn’t go down well.

Indigestion is a really a symptom of stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, large or small intestine imbalances. Causes are improper food choices, over eating, eating too late, or, foods eaten are too cold, too hot, or too spicy.

Modern medicine treats indigestion as a bit of a mystery, regularly blaming indigestion on too much stomach acid (when other tests come up negative). To “control” the acid they prescribe acid blockers which contribute to osteoporosis, immune dysfunction, digestive imbalances, improper breakdown of amino acids, anemia and more.

From the natural perspective indigestion is usually sluggish digestion, and, looking at a wider spectrum, may also be from holding anger in the stomach. What can’t you digest in your life?

Natural treatments can reverse most symptoms of indigestion to restore emotional and digestive balance. When you change your diet and use herbs, they are only needed for a few weeks to months for a chronic problem. Herbs, cell salts, or homeopathic remedies may also be valuable for an occasional indigestion quick fix.

Eat smaller meals; monitor what works for you as well as not eating after 8:00 pm. It is important to remove tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea, and fast foods from your diet.

A great supplement for indigestion is DGL (Deglycerized licorice) as it acts to soothe indigestion from an inflamed or ulcerated stomach.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Natural Remedies

Irritable bowel is a disorder which causes discomfort and distress to the intestines. Symptoms irritable bowel symptomsare characterized most commonly by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Some may have constipation while others may have diarrhea, or a combination of both in alternation. Other symptoms include bloating and gas, mucus in the stool, and urging after having a bowel movement.

As many as 20 percent of the adults have symptoms of IBS, making it one of the most common disorders diagnosed by doctors. It occurs more often in women than in men, and it begins before the age of 35 in about 50 percent of people.

IBS, for most people, can come from poor diet containing fast foods, dairy, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea, and soda. These things also cause the death of the friendly bacteria in the intestines. Other causes may be due to dietary allergies, or food sensitivities. Stress may play a part in the cause.

Modern medicine treats IBS with diet changes, fiber supplements, anti-diarrheal medications, anticholinergic medications (nervous system), anti-depression medications, and counseling. Medication specific to IBS is Alosetron (Lotronex) which is supposed to relax the colon – only approved for women. These medications only treat the symptoms and create dependency.

To heal the body the natural way, reduce stress, improve the diet and women should balance their hormones. Using the herb Vitex (3 capsules a day) may eliminate other hormonal symptoms as well as some of the IBS symptoms.

Disclaimer: some drugs and herbs should not be combined.

Natural Healing Protocol: Combining supplements will do more to support your body’s ability to function properly than using just one. Use the following remedies for best results — your ability to heal will depend on the severity and length of time your symptoms have been present.
